This is a lovely Japanese stencil painting using a traditional Ise Katagami textile pattern done on mulberry paper with intricate colors added. The painting would likely be used to represent the finished piece of cloth.

The patterb uses two elements from traditional Japanese pattern to create the design. One being the Uzumaki spiral motif which is centuries old and is a classic design used in Japanese textiles and is associated with water. The second one is the Shippo pattern consisting of superimposed circles that form petals and represents the seven tressures of Buddhism (gold, silver, pearl, coral, crystal, agate and lapis lazuli. It is a symbol of harmony and good relationship and was often used in ladies Kimonos during the Edo period in Japan. It dates from the mid-twentieth century.

The painting is in very good condition.
