This is an exquisite Victorian silver and coral baby rattle. This object functioned as a toy with a whistle and bells as well as a teething device. The rattle is ornately engraved with decorative motifs. This rattle actually has two rows of bells, with 11 bells in total. The whistle is inscribed with D.W.B Shaw 1865. The piece also includes the english hallmarks. The walking lion means the mark for English silver 92.5%, The anchor mark is for the Birimingham Assay Office, and O which teels the date 1863.During the Georgian/Victorian period coral rattles were very popular. When coral is taken out of the water it hardens, making it ideal for teething babies. The rattles would have been tied to the child with either ribbon or a gold chain, so it is not lost. Coral was thought to be a powerful amulet against evil and disease, since the ancient times. Silver was also a common material for baby, since it killed bacteria.
