A very nice woodblock print depicting five farmers planting rice in the rice paddles of Japan during the month of  June, The image is done in black ink on white rice paper and dates ca. 1980. Gihachiro Okuyama (1907-1981) began studying printmaking with Gajin Kosaka (1877-1953) in 1923. Later, he began exhibiting prints with the Nihon Soska Hanga Association. Okuyama created over 1000 works within his lifetime. He started off as a commerical artist designing advertisements for different companies and established his own advertising company in 1931. He created successful commercial art for the Japan Wool Company and Nikka Whiskey among others. Although he is probably most known today for his monochromatic prints. Okuyama was adept at capturing traditional Japan, in simple shades of black and white.
