Meiji, Japanese scroll painting on silk of a great brown phoenix rooster with a long flowing tail and hen standing under the trunk of a tall pine tree. The rooster is crowing and the hen is looking up towards the rooster. the background is washed to look like a forest of trees in the distance. The birds are painted in bright colors and the feathers show great detail. It is signed "Nakagawa Shurel" and has one seal. Nakagawa Shurel was a Japanese turn of the century artist who is known for his rooster and hen woodblock prints. 
 
The painting is mounted on a green silk scroll background and missing one of the bone scroll caps. The mounting shows minimal amount of wear and tear.
