An 18th Century, 1737, hand colored woodblock print by the Japanese artist Torii Kiyomasu II, (1706-1763), depicting the famous Kabuki Actor, Segawa Kikunojo playing the historic 12th century courtesan Oiso no Tora. She became a favored character often portrayed in the Kabuki Theater. The band of Japanese characters at the bottom read from right to left, "painted by the artist Torii Kiyomasu") with the publisher Urokogata-ya's circular trademark in the center. The figure is dressed in heavy flowered robes and is seated on a pillow while looking out to the garden with a cherry tree and quiet pool of water. The woodblock is printed on thin mulberry paper with hand painted colors that enhance the delicate design though have faded through time. An example of the same print by Tori Kiyomasu II is part of the James Michener Collection at the Honolulu Museum of Art.
The paper shows foxing and edges are frayed with several tiny losses.Dimensions: 5 1/4" X 11"
