During the 19th century the Haida people began to carve Argillite as trade goods for Europeans and Americans, because of their decline in their traditional economic practice of fishing.  Argillite, a finely grained sedimentary rock that is made of mud and ooze. The piece possibly depicts an eagle, thunderbird, bear/wolf, and a rabbit. The piece is beautifully and intricately craved. The totem pole also includes a stand.
