This is a Chinese Khakkhara. The staff is topped with metal rings, 3 on each side, and traditionally carried by Buddhist monks. The Khakkhara was originally used as a noisemaker to announce a monk's presence or frighten away animals. It is typically used now as a rhythmic instrument during chanting and sutra recitation. This Khakkhara is placed inside a lacquer box, which slides open to reveal the piece.The lacquer box shows some signs of wear and age. With some chipping to the bottom and wear to the surface.
