This is a African Baga Snake Headdress, from ca. 1965-1970. The headdress is hand carved and painted by the Baga tribe of the West African. The piece is a protective spirit that presides over male initiation rites of the Baga people. The ritual celebrates the transition of boys to men and provides spiritual protection for the members of the community. The headdress is held on the shoulders of the dancer whose body is hidden beneath a costume of raffia, bells and feathers. The snake has a black diamond shaped pattern stretching across its body and sides. The snakes curved body proves movement to the snake’s body.
The snake is in good condition. Has sone signs of wear due to age and use.
