Ambrotypes are an underexposed, underdeveloped, wet-collodion negative on glass. The picture appears positive because of the dark background. Ambrotypes are almost exclusively portraiture. Ambrotypes date to c. 1854-1880s.
The photo is housed in a miniature hinged black case made of gutta percha. The front and back of the case display a beautiful pattern of natural motifs done in high relief. The case is thermoplastic. The case opens like a book, revealing an orange/brown colored velvet on the left side and the photo on the right. The right is of a man seated man with his arm resting on a table. The photo is incased in a golden foil which includes another pattern of natural motifs, most likely done by repousse.
The piece is in very good condition.Dimensions: 2 1/2" X 1/2" D X 3" H
