19th Century Nocturne Style Painting. A style that depicts the atmosphere of night portraying the subjects as they appear in a veil of light. The night painting theme has been used throughout histor to represent themes of religion, history, genre scenes, potraits, and landscapes. In the 19th Century Nocturne painting imagery conveyed mystical, and religious subjects portrayed with a deep reverence for nature. The light source was usually the moon which symbolized hope, guidance, and divinity. The light provided a symbolic safe haven and the way home for the viewer.
 
This painting depicts a pastoral scene with a flock of sheep illuminated by the moonlight. The painting measures 16 3/4" X 13" and in the frame 22 1/2" X 18 1/2". It has layers of varnish which create the overall dark appearance. 
 
The varnish has crackled over the years however the underlying painting is in good condition. The painting is unsigned. It is framed in an ornate molded plaster and gilded frame. The frame has several losses. See photos.
