This pestile or pilon was created by the Taíno people, circa 1000 A.D. This piece was made either in Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic, 100 years before the arrival of Christopher Columbus. It is hand carved from stone, the handle of the pestle depicting a frog face, or a smiling face. This piece is heavy and shows signs of use.
