Mid 19th Century, European, copper plate. Beautifully repoussed, the plate depicts an allegory of shepherds and Christ. An allegory is a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one. Here, Christ looks down from the tower watching the arguing shepherds and the fraility of mankind. The plate features a handsome rim adorned with an unending border of roses, as well as geometric aesthetics.
