This is a finely carved marble reproduction taken from the head of the Roman marble Sculpture, "The Albani Faun" also known as "the Laughing Faun" ca. 100 BC. The original sculpture currently resides in the Munich Glyptothek in Germany. In the 1700's, was part of the collection of the Cardinal Albani family in Rome. In 1797 it was taken from Rome to Paris claimed by Napoleon as part of his treasures in his invasion of the Papal States. After Napoleon was defeated, the marble was sold to Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria who took it to Munich and is where it remains today. The faun in Roman mythology represents a half-man, half goat creature that has a playful spirit of nature.

Through the ages, many renditions have been made of the original sculpture. This one is especially nicely done in a cream-colored marble with a marble plinth base. The piece shows careful attention to detail and fine craftmanship.

The piece is in good condition.
