Han Dynasty, Chinese, grey terracotta, goose/duck, hu-shaped, wine vessel. Often placed within tombs for the eternal enjoyment of the departed person within their afterlife, such vessels were known for their pear-shaped cross-sections with flaring, narrow necks and S-shaped profiles. Ours has been molded and hand-built with a body patterned from archaic bronze vessels of similar design. The molded head was artfully attached to a long, slender, curved neck. Eyes and feathers have been incised into the clay, adding beautiful aesthetics. Ring markings can be seen around the body where they clay coils used to form the body were smoothed and shaped together. The neck was burnished to smooth the joint where the head and body were handsomely joined. This gorgeous vessel bears traces of reddish pigment painted in scrolling bands around the body, neck and head. A footed bottom is present. Traces of burial clay can be found inside and over all surfaces. This vessel is in good condition with wear commensurate with age.
