Han Dynasty, Chinese, terracotta, dog figure/statue. Often placed within tombs in order to guide and guard the departed within their afterlife, honor for canines has reigned throughout Chinese history as such animals are symbols of bonding, trust and loyalty. Poised within a crouched position, this handsome figure/statue was molded and hand-crafted of red terracotta clay and is unglazed. Alert with head facing forward, his round eyes gaze forward, ears stand erect, and both his teeth and tongue are visible. His tail is coiled to one side, and a harness with two large, overlapping loops is worn. Incised lines provide added aesthetics to his whiskers, eyelashes, nose wrinkles and toes. Restoration has taken place throughout the years to his two front legs as well as harness. Please note, this figure/statue shows signs of wear commensurate with age. Additionally, there is a chip to his nose. See photos for more details.
