Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368 AD) Carved Wood and Polychromed Bodhisattva. The carved wood figure depicts a Bodhisattva, a being of enlightenment and compassion with the attributes of bearing the worlds suffering. The figure is seated in a relaxed pose on the back of a recumbent elephant, wearing long flowing robes and ornate crown. The face has a gentle expression, and the hands are in a blessing mudra. The wood bears traces of gesso and pigment and age.
