This intriguingly beautiful piece of 19th century white porcelain pottery, known as hakuji or hakugorai, depicts the form of a half-dragon, half-carp. Made in Hirado, Japan, it served as either a vase or a censer. The roaring dragon is brought to life with painted black and brown eyes as it emerges from the sculpted water, extending its fins and scaled tail.
There are two small chips on individual gills on both the left and right sides of the dragons.
