This piece is a 19th century Japanese cast bronze vessel with incised Chinese cursive script writing of poems or stories. Incised enamel painted figurative designs are in three sections; one depicting a boy and tiger, the second a man holding a shovel or spade standing under a tree beside a large pot, and the third an old sage sitting beside a table with a bowl of fruit and a child at his feet.

The bottom of the pot has an antique Japanese Kagami bronze mirror soldered into it with the design to the inside. There is a hole near the base that has been filled. It may have been used for a lamp at one time, as there is a 1/4" hold in the bottom tapered section which has been sealed with red lacquer.
