About Haig's > Our History

1973: Paul Haig opens P.R. Haig Custom Jewelers at 307 1/2 Main Street in downtown Rochester, MI. The store is fashioned after the jewelry shops that were common in Europe before 1865, when craftspeople worked in the shops, finishing each piece by hand.

1976: Is asked by Capitol Records to make the silver promotional bullets for Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band.Shop Picture. 

1980: Store moves to 436 Main Street in downtown Rochester. Begins to display ancient art from Asia and South America.

1992: Gas explosion levels the two-story Crissman building connected to P.R. Haig Jewelers, causing approximately $25,000 in interior and structural damage to the store.

1993: Haig Galleries opens at 311 1/2 Main Street in downtown Rochester. Specializing in ancient, Asian and tribal arts, the gallery is open by appointment-only and displays and sells artifacts collected by Paul during the past 30 years.

1994: Paul Haig is injured during a trip to Indonesia when the bus he was riding in plunged off a winding road. Paul, whose back was broken in the accident, spent several weeks in an Indonesian hospital before doctors allowed him to travel back to the United States. Paul has now fully recovered.

1998: P.R. Haig Jewelers moves to 311 Main Street in downtown Rochester. Building is restored to its 1918 appearance and receives a construction and a design award from the Detroit Engineering Society for its preservation/renovation design.

2003: Haig Jewelers celebrates 30 years in business

2005: Haig Jewelers and Haig Galleries merge to form Haig's of Rochester Fine Jewelry.

2007: Haig's of Rochester Fine Jewelry introduces the H Line jewelry concept. This new jewelry setting is exclusive to Haig's and can be made for diamond and colored gemstone jewelry of all types.

Paul Haig is awarded the first Sunrise Pinnacle Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Rochester Regional Chamber of Commerce.
