Unique Items: Pre-Columbian, Egyptian, Greek, European, Native American
At Haig's of Rochester we specialize in The arts
of Asia & the Pacific. These items represent the unique cultures
and religions of the various regions throughout this ancient and
mysterious continent and its surrounding nations. From the crude,
simplistic pots of the Ban Chiang culture of Thailand to colorful
Japanese woodblock prints, to intricately carved Chinese ivories,
Asian art is as varied as the people that inhabit its vast lands.
The Chinese produced colorful, lavish silken court
robes and rank badges to represent the complex hierarchy of their
political system during the Ching and Ming Dynasties while the Japanese
created life-like, oftentimes humorous miniature carvings out of
wood and ivory. Carved during the Tokugawa and Meiji periods (1603-1912),
these small treasures, called netsuke, adorned Japanese garments
and would suspend from the sash a hanging article, such as a medicine
case or tobacco pouch, by means of a cord. Any and every medium
was employed by Asian artists, who would create sumptuous textiles,
delicate lacquers, subtle jades, poetic scrolls, pious brass Buddhas,
and intimidating weapons for anyone from the emperor on down to
the peasant.
In addition, we also collect Pre-Columbian art --
items originating from Mexico, Latin America and South America prior
to 1492 AD. In our gallery, you'll also see a few ancient artifacts
from Greece, Rome and Europe.
We purchase
artifacts and textiles from around the world and are continually
updating our inventory. Our travels, as well as our show experience
has allowed us to purchase items from some of the best sources in
the world. Every item is guaranteed as to its authenticity, condition
and clear provenance, and comes with an unconditional two-week,
money back guarantee.
